How to Choose the Right Uniform Fabric for Your Industry

Two businesses can order the same polo, in the same colour, with the same logo, and have completely different experiences with it. One team spends the day in air conditioning and the other spends it on a rooftop in February. The garment isn't the variable — the uniform fabric is.

Fabric determines how a uniform feels at the end of a long shift, how it looks after fifty washes, and whether it's appropriate for the environment it's worn in. Here's how the main options perform, and which industries they suit best.

The four fabrics you'll be choosing between

Cotton breathes well, feels soft against the skin and takes dye beautifully, which makes it a strong option for brand colours. The trade-offs are that it wrinkles, it can shrink if it isn't pre-shrunk, it holds moisture rather than moving it away from the body, and it wears out faster under heavy laundering.

Polyester is durable, colourfast, quick-drying and holds its shape through industrial washing. It's the foundation of most performance and activewear ranges. Straight polyester can feel less breathable and can retain odour, although modern moisture-wicking constructions have improved significantly on both.

Poly-cotton blends, typically 65/35 or 50/50, are the workhorse of the uniform industry. You get much of cotton's comfort alongside polyester's durability and wrinkle resistance, at a sensible price point. For most businesses asking about the best fabric for uniforms, this is where the conversation lands.

Performance and technical fabrics — moisture-wicking knits, four-way stretch, ripstop weaves, antimicrobial finishes — cost more but solve specific problems around movement, perspiration, tearing and hygiene.

Fabric weight matters as much as composition

A fabric's GSM, or grams per square metre, tells you how heavy it is. A 150 to 180 GSM tee is light and suits warmer conditions. A 200 to 220 GSM tee feels noticeably more premium and lasts longer. Hoodies generally sit between 280 and 400 GSM.

Heavier isn't automatically better. It's better for durability and worse for heat, so match the weight to the conditions your team works in rather than to the impression you'd like to create.

Matching fabric to your industry

Hospitality. Front of house needs a fabric that still looks crisp after a ten-hour shift and forgives the occasional spill. Poly-cotton blends in mid to darker tones are the reliable choice. Kitchen staff need breathability and heat tolerance above everything else, so lighter blends work better, and anything that clings should be avoided. Aprons are best in heavier cotton canvas or drill, because they take the abuse so the garment underneath doesn't have to.

Trades and construction. Cotton drill and poly-cotton drill dominate here for good reason: abrasion resistance. Where hi-vis compliance applies, the garment needs to meet AS/NZS 4602.1 for the relevant class and the colour must meet AS/NZS 1906.4. This is one area where you specify to the standard rather than to preference. Look for reinforced stress points, and consider ripstop weaves where tearing is a risk.

Healthcare. Hygiene and laundering set the brief. Poly-cotton blends and technical fabrics with antimicrobial finishes handle high-temperature, high-frequency washing far better than pure cotton, which degrades quickly under that regime. Fluid resistance matters, as does choosing a fabric that doesn't become translucent when damp.

Corporate and office. The priorities are comfort in a climate-controlled environment and a fabric that photographs well and holds a press. Cotton-rich shirting with a small elastane content for movement works well, along with finer-gauge knits for polos. Wrinkle-resistant finishes earn their keep here.

Warehouse and logistics. Constant movement across variable temperatures. Durable poly-cotton with some stretch, breathable knits, and layering pieces all work well, because a chilled facility in the morning and a loading dock in the afternoon are two very different environments.

Retail. The uniform is a brand asset first, so prioritise colour retention and how the garment holds its shape across a shift. A fabric that fades unevenly after a month makes the whole team look untidy.

Fabric and branding go hand in hand

Your fabric choice affects how the garment can be decorated. Embroidery needs enough substance to support the stitch, and very lightweight knits can pucker. Screen printing sits best on flat, cotton-rich surfaces. Heat transfer and DTF work across a much wider range, including polyester and technical fabrics, and are usually the answer for hi-vis and performance gear.

It's worth deciding on fabric and branding method together rather than in sequence. Doing so saves a round of reprints and a fair amount of frustration.

Five questions to settle before you order

  1. What temperature range does the team work in, and is the work indoors, outdoors, or both?
  2. How often will the garment be washed, and by whom — staff at home, or a commercial laundry?
  3. Are there safety standards that apply to this role?
  4. How visible is this garment to customers?
  5. How long does it need to last before replacement?

Answer those five and the fabric choice usually narrows to one or two options very quickly.

Always request a sample

Spec sheets can't tell you how a fabric drapes, how it feels after a wash, or how the colour reads under your lighting. Order a sample, wash it a few times, and put it on the person who'll actually be wearing it. It's a small step that prevents most fabric-related regret.
